Markiplier, the YouTube sensation and creator of the channel MarkiplierGAME, has an interesting video on his channel about how he suffers from Phasmophobia, or fear of Ghosts/spirits. For example in his video he gets very creeped out when he sees things that look like ghosts/spirits,
but aren't there anymore in real life (For example when you close your eyes and try to visualize something). This got me thinking, what VR headset does Markiplier use? Which one do I recommend if you want to watch Markiplier's content?
I. What is phasmophobia?
Phasmophobia is a fear of apparitions or ghosts. It may also refer to an aversion to phantoms, specters, or spirits. The term derives from φάντασμα (phántasma), a Greek word meaning vision or apparition.
Although phasmophobia is common in many countries, research suggests that Asian nations report higher levels of fear than Western cultures such as Europe and North America do.
Studies indicate that women are more likely to report experiencing phasmophobia than men are. In terms of treatment, techniques like exposure therapy have been shown to be effective in helping individuals overcome their fears.
II. General Information on Phasmophobia
If you suffer from phasmophobia, or arachnephobia, or any of a number of other phobias—you are not alone. Many people suffer from some form of anxiety disorder, some more than others.
It is important to remember that no one can make you afraid of something if you do not let them. So take a deep breath, grab a few comfy pillows, get out your Oculus Rift CV1 headset—and read on! A quick introduction to what phasmophobia is:
Phasmophobia, also known as the fear of ghosts, is a specific type of fear in which someone sees things like ghosts, evil spirits or other non-living objects as threateningly real and present. To the person who suffers from this type of anxiety disorder, it might seem like they could touch the ghost they see in front of them.
The most common response is usually intense fear with panic symptoms such as racing heart rate and difficulty breathing; but sometimes may also cause complete terror which immobilizes the individual who suffers with this condition.
III. Effect of phasmophobia in videogames
While being interviewed, Markipler said that he has phasmophobia. It is a phobia caused by an object or situation that induces feelings of intense fear. According to him, there are many horror games out there which make him feel anxious. They trigger his phasmophobia.
He sometimes likes to play them but when they get too much for him, he takes off the VR headset. He prefers playing games like Job Simulator because it doesn't scare him. It just makes him laugh.
He stills gets scared from time to time but he really tries not to let himself be overcome with panic attacks. The way that Markiplier lives with phasmophobia is quite commendable considering how hard it can be to cope with this type of disorder.
The good thing about videogames today is that most of them offer different types of gameplay modes for people who have different preferences. You can choose one where you would only use controllers, another one where you can walk freely without a controller, etcetera.
If you're suffering from phasmophobia as well, know that you're not alone! There are many other people who suffer from this disorder as well so don't worry if you're feeling down about yourself.
IV. How could Virtual Reality help with phasomobehavioral problems?
With VR, phasomobehavioral problems can be eliminated in children. And yes, I did say eliminated. By getting children to immerse themselves in a virtual world that they perceive as real (aka: an immersive virtual environment) these problems can be dramatically reduced or completely eradicated entirely.
By allowing your child to see a different version of reality they will be able to imagine their phasomobehavioral problem as something that it not real. Through guided therapy (i.e: carefully managed exposure to a variety of scenarios)
one should be able to eliminate their fears from our world into one where everything is fine and there are no worries at all. With time, you'll end up with a child who has been cured for life as soon as possible!
V. Choosing a VR Headset
Now that you’ve decided to start experiencing virtual reality, you will want to decide which VR headset is right for you. The choice might seem daunting at first, but when it comes down to it, there are only a few things you need to consider.
All of these products have their pros and cons, but they’re also all excellent in their own right – deciding on a best option will just come down to how much money you want to spend, how important screen quality is,
how many games or videos you want access to immediately out of box etc. To help make your decision easier, here is an overview of each major virtual reality system
